Stress, along with back problems are the main reasons for workplace absenteeism according to the Health & Safety Exetutive.

Legal Minefield

Stress is a hugely confusing subject and many employers are unaware of both their legal responsibility with regards to stress in the workplace and the very expensive cost of getting it wrong!

Workplace stress, depression and anxiety could already cost 12.8 million working days each year.

Did you know that under "Duty of Care", Health and Safety at work act 1974 employers must ensure that people are not made ill by their work?  The Health and Safety Executive have made clear this also applies to STRESS RELATED ILLNESS.  Stress is also covered by the Disability Act.

Stress sets off an alarm bell in the brain, which responds by preparing the body for defensive action.  The nervous system is aroused and hormones are released to sharpen the senses, quicken the pulse, deepen respiration and tense the muscles.  This response (sometimes called Fight or Flight) is important because it helps us to defend ourselves against perceived threats.  The response is biologically pre-programmed.  Everyone responds in much the same way, regardless of whether the stressful situation is at work, at home or elsewhere.

Problems occur when individuals are subject to repeated stress or perceived stress.  When the pattern is repeated, the body, in its attempt to respond to Fight of Flight, creates a hormone overload, which leads to toxicity.  Once the system is toxic, it affects physical and mental functions, thereby creating more stress, and so the cycle continues.

When we are stressed we tend to opt for "quick fixes" to get us through the working day.  We reach for caffeine, fizzy drinks, sugar, nicotine or "pick-me-ups".  Then, at the end of the day, we relax and unwind with our faithful bottle of wine and television (electronic valium!).  This perpetuates stress, illness and effects our general wellbeing.  Some of the factors that jeopardize our health are:

  • Poor diet
  • Intolerances and allergies
  • Lack of relaxation techniques
  • Negativity
  • Inability to manage stressful situations
  • Poor posture and breathing
  • Lack of exercise and poor fitness levels
  • Not achieving personal goals
  • Poor work/life balance
  • Too much work/pressure or, indeed, too little work/pressure.

The solution to your problems is only a click away...
