CIEH Principles of COSHH

Level 1 Health & Safety qualification

Prepares employees to contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances.

Substances hazardous to health are a relatively uncommon cause of workplace injuries, but the consequences that do occur can be relatively major and long term, such as asthma and cancers.  Basic health and safety training provides a good introduction to awareness of substances hazardous to health, but anyone required to use hazardous substances would benefit from focused training.

About the course

The qualification covers the following topics:

  • Definition and types of substances hazardous to health in the workplace
  • Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes
  • COSHH assessments and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002

Who is the course for?

This qualification is designed for those who use substances hazardous to health at work. It introduces candidates to substances, the risks and controls available, and outlines what to expect from a control of subtances hazardous to health (COSHH) assessment. The qualification will prepare employees to contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in their workplaces.

How long does it take?

The course is delivered over 5 hours and assessment is by means of a short objective test of 20 questions.  Students are encouraged to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in co-operation with managers and supervisors.  CIEH certificates will be provided for all candidates who pass the examination within 3-4 weeks of completion of the course.
