Basic Child Care First Aid

12 Hour OFSTED recommended Basic Child Care First Aid Course

Duration: 12 Hours

Qualification: Course Certification - ASET Level 2 Award

Who is it for?

Child carer - either based in a childcare setting, or those childminding, who wish to have sufficient knowledge of first aid and medical conditions affecting children to meet the recommendations by OFSTED. 

This course is also suitable for parents wanting to gain knowledge and those running summer or activity groups for babies and children.

What will they learn?

This course is both the theory and practical based.  Participants will learn the basic knowledge to care for babies and children in dealing with an emergency situation. The course covers the key points as recommended by OFSTED.

Course Content:

The course is split into six sessions:

Incident Management 

  • Types of incidents that happen in a childcare setting
  • Reporting of incidents
  • What are the priorities of treatment for babies and children
  • Mechanism of injuries
  • Managing the unconscious baby and child.

Resuscitation/Choking 

  • What causes hypoxia in babies and children
  • Rescue breathing and Basic Life Support for babies and children
  • Managing a choking baby and child both conscious and unconscious.

Bleeding, Burns and Shock: 

  • Contents of First Aid Kit
  • Treatment of major and minor wounds
  • Foreign objects
  • Nose bleeds, teeth knocked out and bites
  • Treatment of shock
  • Treatment of a burn and scalds
  • Hygiene procedures.

Unconsciousness: 

  • Head injury
  • Poisoning
  • Electric shock
  • Hyperventilation/Asthma
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Seizures/Febrile convulsions

Fractures: 

  • Causes and recognition of fractures
  • Treatment of fractures to upper and lower body
  • Neck and spinal injuries
  • Cause, recognition and treatment for sprains and strains.

Minor illness and miscellaneous conditions: 

  • Recognition and management of conjunctivitis, sickle cell anaemia, aches and pains, diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Recognition of chicken pox, measles, German measles, mumps and meningitis
  • Administering medication
